NEW YORK, December 26, 2013 –NECO’s dear friend and Ellis Island Medalist Marvin Scott, Senior Correspondent for PIX11 News, traveled to Afghanistan where he celebrated the holidays with Tri-State area soldiers. And thanks to the generosity of NECO Chairman, Nasser J. Kazeminy, Marvin Scott was able to bring along 200 ‘GI Teddy Bears’ for the troops as a small token of thanks for their service during the holidays.
"There is no greater way to give back to our community than to support our troops, especially those stationed overseas,” said Scott. “We’re bringing a big hug from home and we want them know they've not been forgotten and we are grateful for their service.” Each bear is not only adorably outfitted in military uniforms but each play ‘God Bless the USA’, the classic song made famous by country legend Lee Greenwood – and a song closely associated with the Ellis Island Medal Of Honor ceremony.
For over 20 years, Marvin Scott has co-anchored the ceremony on Ellis Island and has introduced the esteemed 82nd Airborne Division's All-American Chorus whose particularly moving performance of the song has closed the show since 2001. So it was very close to all of our hearts when Marvin offered to take NECO’s favorite song to share with our brave men and women serving overseas.
This was the fifth holiday visit for Marvin Scott who made similar visits to Iraq in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009. This year, he traveled as the guests of Air Mobility Command and will be embedded with the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. And if circumstance warrants that we have troops overseas in 2014, NECO promises that if our friend Marvin is willing to go, we will make sure he has ‘GI Teddy Bears’ to share.
Thank you, Marvin!
