Thanks to all who supported NECO's Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts!

NECO would like to thank all of those that joined us to help alleviate the suffering of those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. NECO was honored to work with 2013 Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient, Gail McGovern, the CEO and President of the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross was one of the first relief organizations to reach the area and they intend to stay in the region until people’s lives are returned to normal.

The American Red Cross is expected to release a full accounting of their efforts in relation to Typhoon Haiyan in mid-February, but they did share with NECO the following update:

  • The American Red Cross has committed $19 million to the response for Typhoon Haiyan. To date, the American Red Cross has deployed 35 disaster relief specialists to the Philippines, including people with expertise in relief distribution, mapping, emergency cash distributions, information management and telecommunications.
  •  Relief distributions including food, clean water, and supplies continue to affected communities. For example, an American Red Cross relief team is supporting the global Red Cross response in Tacloban, distributing tarps, water cans, mosquito nets and hygiene kits.
  •  Shelter and debris clearance are high priorities as the rainy season approaches. The global Red Cross network has provided basic emergency shelter materials to 324,000 households.
  •  The Philippine Red Cross, with the support of more than two dozen Red Cross societies from around the globe, has delivered food packages to more than 1 million people and provided clean water to more than 750,000 people.

NECO was glad to mobilize our Ellis Island Medal of Honor family and present the American Red Cross with a sizeable donation that will certainly help those affected.
